Soldier’s Home Analysis
ââ¬Å"Soldierââ¬â¢s Homeâ⬠Literary Analysis It is an obvious actuality that war changes individuals, and this change turns out to be particularly evident when fighters get back to their families. In the short story ââ¬Å"Soldierââ¬â¢s Homeâ⬠, Ernest Hemingway portrays a soldierââ¬â¢s perspective in the wake of showing up home from the war and shows the challenges of attempting to carry on with an ordinary life, fit in with society, and begin once again. Hemingway presents Harold Krebs as he gets back from World War I a lot later than the remainder of the soldiers. It is exceptionally apparent from his conduct that he is damaged, befuddled, and feels especially strange. He doesnââ¬â¢t realize where to start to get back on track and genuinely feels confounded about his motivation throughout everyday life, which can be a lot of identified with the manner in which numerous warriors feel in our age. Things, for example, fitting in with the general public, finding a new line of work, and beginning another relationship become much increasingly entangled, and Krebs communicates this multiple times all through the story. He particularly centers around the subject of beginning a relationship with a young lady and his failure and absence of enthusiasm of presenting himself. He gets a kick out of the chance to watch ladies, and even wants to be with one; be that as it may, seeking and putting time into it totally turns him off. Hemmingway never clarifies why Krebs feels along these lines however gives enough insights that maybe Krebs once endured misfortune. ââ¬Å"Now he would have enjoyed a young lady on the off chance that she had come to him and not had any desire to talk, yet here at home it was very complicated. He realized he would never experience everything again. â⬠The peruser is centered around the words ââ¬Å"againâ⬠and ââ¬Å"It allâ⬠, permitting the crowd to accept that he may have done this once previously. The word â â¬Å"complicatedâ⬠is rehashed a various occasions when itââ¬â¢s related with young ladies; ââ¬Å"the young ladies live in a confounded world, ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"they were too complicatedâ⬠, ââ¬Å"it is too complicatedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"He had attempted to so to shield his life from being confused. â⬠â which is another hint that Krebs may have experienced an unpleasant break-up.Whether this occurred during his time away or before the war, Hemingway never clarifies. Another purpose behind Krebsââ¬â¢ absence important to date could be expected that he created diverse point of view toward ladies in his time in Germany. During any war ladies typically become survivors of sexual and physical ambush and it is sheltered to expect that perhaps Krebs encountered this during his time in Germany. ââ¬Å"His associates, who had heard point by point records of German ladies discovered binded to machine gunsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ and ââ¬Å"Vaguely, he needed a young lady however he i d not have any desire to spend quite a while getting her are explanations that can insinuate him having enthusiasm for getting a young lady only for a brief timeframe, for joy, yet that's it. With all the distinction Krebs feels, the peruser is compelled to address ââ¬Å"Where is home for Harold Krebs? â⬠It is clear that he doesnââ¬â¢t feel home, despite the fact that he originates from an incredible modest community in Oklahoma, has a steady and cherishing family, and has others appealing to God for him. This, in any case, isn't sufficient for Krebs to make up for all the abhorrences he saw during the war.His mother urges him to discuss it however never really focuses, which results with Krebs feeling like he can't communicate without being misconstrued. During breakfast, his mom requests that he implore with her to what he reacts, ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t. â⬠This implies Krebs lost his confidence. He genuinely doesnââ¬â¢t care what befalls him and continues to talk unresponsively. When his dad says ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t you love your mom, dear kid? â⬠and Harold answers, ââ¬Å"noâ⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t love anyoneâ⬠. His mom in a split second begins to cry, to which Harold realizes. He realizes he hurt her emotions despite the fact that it doesnââ¬â¢t appear as though he intended to do it intentionally. Many can assume that Krebs can't cause his folks to comprehend all that he experienced in battle. Articulation, for example, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t love anyoneâ⬠nearly seems as though he is indicating his folks he is altogether grown up and not the young man he used to be. It is protected to state that Krebs is most likely experiencing numerous feelings on the double. There are things in which he says that he most likely doesnââ¬â¢t mean, however doesnââ¬â¢t realize how to communicate them otherwise. One case of this is around the finish of the story when Haroldââ¬â¢s mother discloses to him she held him near her heart when he was a child, to which he answers, ââ¬Å"I know, Mummy, Iââ¬â¢ll attempt to be beneficial for you. â⬠He repudiates himself by calling his mom ââ¬Å"Mummyâ⬠, which shows he does to be sure love her. He continues to reveal to himself that his discussion with his mom didnââ¬â¢t contact him and moving ceaselessly to Kansas City would be a decent break from his family circumstance. His reasoning shows that he might be deceiving himself, attempting to persuade himself that life would be better away from them.Maybe he doesnââ¬â¢t need his mom to cherish him since he feels embarrassed and disgusted for all the things heââ¬â¢s done during the war. Hemingway leaves a lot of ââ¬Å"Soldierââ¬â¢s Homeâ⬠to the readerââ¬â¢s understanding. The story doesnââ¬â¢t have a set plot and the fundamental character Krebs isn't in an ideal situation toward the finish of the story or toward the start. A ton of Krebsââ¬â¢ conduct can be resembled to our present day soldiersââ¬â¢ who get back home from war in Iraq and Afghanistan. From individual experience, the vast majority of them never genuinely talk about everything that occurred there, and on the off chance that they do they never communicate their actual feelings about the events. Many experience difficulty adapting to everyday lives and at times even express savage conduct toward their friends and family. Itââ¬â¢s difficult to make decisions on their condition on the grounds that the subject of executing another person is fairly vast to somebody who has never been at war. It is something so unique for us that the main route for us to comprehend is to be there genuinely and intellectually and no true to life film will ever really catch those emotions. Sadly during Hemingwayââ¬â¢s time PTSD was something that wasnââ¬â¢t talked about or even treated. The society and culture at the time was a lot of expelled from the real factors of what war was truly similar to. It wa snââ¬â¢t communicated over the web, and individuals were not presented to unequivocal narratives that demonstrated all the detestations that happen to individuals. I for one trust Hemingway, who additionally served quickly in World War I, could relate a ton to Krebs and his condition. It is something that could have been a path for him to adapt to his very own evil spirits while attempting to cause the perusers to comprehend the sentiments of lack of concern, void and the perspective of officer upon his arrival home.

Marijuana Essays (3147 words) - Cannabis, Herbalism,
Marijuana Thesis Marijuana is a substance that has become very much a part of American culture. Nearly 65 million Americans have either used it occasionally or regularly. The use of marijuana hit mainstream America about thirty years ago and it has been accepted by a large segment of society ever since (Rosenthal 16). The debate on whether this substance should be legalized or not remains a very hot topic today. Despite government efforts to isolate and eliminate its use, it is clear that the use of marijuana is still very popular. There is an obvious problem concerning marijuana today. Governments on all three levels: local, state, and federal are trying desperately to find an appropriate policy involving marijuana. National polls show that more than 70% of the American people, from both ends of the political spectrum, support controlled access to marijuana for medicinal purposes. Despite fierce opposition from the federal government, voters in California and Arizona passed ballot initiatives in the fall of 1996 favoring the legalization of medicinal marijuana (Randall 33). If support for marijuana at least as a medicinal remedy is so high, then why have only a few states taken steps to change their policy? There are several reasons why marijuana remains illegal. Mainly, it is a political issue kicked around by certain special interest groups. Some of these groups perceive marijuana as a threat to the home, tearing families apart and causing them to abandon traditional values. However these groups usually are not legitimate areas of legislation. The more powerful groups have other, more practical reasons for keeping marijuana illegal. Among the most powerful of these groups are the combined law enforcement-judiciary-penal systems. This group sees the elimination of marijuana laws as a threat to their jobs. Add to this group defense lawyers, who stand to make millions of dollars defending marijuana offenders. Consciously or not, they support anti-marijuana laws (Rosenthal 2). Another interest group includes the scientists whose marijuana research is funded by the government. If marijuana were legalized, they would lose millions of dollars in research grants intended to prove the detrimental effects of the substance. Two other unrelated and very influential groups are the liquor lobby and pharmaceutical companies. Their spending is usually very secretive and not publicized very much. Legalization of a competing product that can be produced with relative ease by anyone with access to a plot of land would cut deeply into their profits. And the drug companies want control, rather than just a ban, for they know the medicinal benefits of marijuana (Rosenthal 9). Therefore the major reason marijuana still remains illegal is that special interest groups are blocking legislation by extensive lobbying. Clearly it is seen that many people support its use, at least for medical reasons. It is obvious that the current policy for marijuana is not working very efficiently. The government spends billions of dollars every year to stop its use. This leads to the opening of a very extensive black market for marijuana, because the drug is still in high demand. With the black market comes all the crime and violent acts that create a new problem of overcrowding prison populations. In effect, the government does not really solve the marijuana problem; instead it just creates a new one in its place. Present Policy The present policy on marijuana is that it is classified as a Schedule I drug in the Controlled Substances Act. This law established criteria for determining which substances should be controlled, mechanisms for reducing the availability of controlled drugs, and a structure of penalties for illegal distribution and possession of controlled drugs (Roffman 4). The criteria for Schedule I substances are: The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse, the drug or other substance is not currently accepted for use in medical treatment in the United States, and the drug or other substance has not been proven safe for use under medical supervision. Along with marijuana, hashish, and THC, drugs listed in Schedule I are heroin, LSD, mescaline, peyote, and many other hallucinogens. This makes it illegal for anyone to buy, sell, grow, or possess any amount of marijuana anywhere in the United States. State laws vary in terms of penalties issued.

Creative Inspiration from David Bowie
Creative Inspiration from David Bowie The news of David Bowies death reverberated through the world and caused an outpouring of words of affection, admiration and grief at the loss of such an incredible artist. Bowie was known for his creativity which included not only his music and lyrics but his physical appearance and the personas he created. Any individual seeking creative inspiration can find a gold mine of it in Bowies life and work. Here are some ways David Bowie manifested as a creative genius. Keep Ch-ch-ch-ch-changin Bowie was famous for his ability to constantly reinvent himself. Even in the early days of his fame in the late 60s early 70s, he experimented with different styles from hippie-folk to heavy metal. Perhaps his greatest transformation was the invention of the rock persona Ziggy Stardust. At the time, many felt that Bowie could have ridden the fame and popularity of his Ziggy persona to the end of his career, but at the height of his popularity, he decided to kill Ziggy and move on to other experiments. In America, he explored funk and soul music and then released his most popular album ââ¬Å"Lets Danceâ⬠which was the ultimate ode to rock and the most popular of his career. But even the popularity of this album didnt tempt him to ground his artistic vision and his next phase was a Berlin-inspired industrial and house/electronica experiment. Bowies ability to keep moving forward and constantly explore new artistic styles are what made him the icon he became. Indulge in Artistic Angst but Dont Self-Destruct Bowie had some dark moments in his career. One of his most successful and yet darkest phases was during the time he spent in LA. The glamour and glitz of LA stardom, the parties and cocaine-fueled recording sessions sent him on a tailspin into darkness. Unlike other stars riding their fame into self-destruction, like Iggy Pop, Bowie was able to put an end to that phase when he left LA and moved to Berlin. Change of Scene Can Be Inspiring Just as his move from the UK to LA proved to be an enormous boon to his career, his decision to leave LA and station himself in Cold-War Berlin was another artistically driven choice. The grit and realism of Berlin was the complete opposite of the surreal opulence of LA. The experience grounded him as he moved into yet another creatively experimental phase. Collaborate with Other Artists Bowie enjoyed working with other artists and some of his greatest creative endeavors were the result of these collaborations. Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, Brian Eno and Iggy Pop were included in some of his most successful team projects. He once famously called the then virtually unknown guitarist Phil Palmer at his mothers house to ask him to collaborate on an album since he felt his own guitar skills were subpar. He was known for being generous and respectful of other peoples work and didnt let fame or ego get in the way of his artistic vision. Set Your Standards and Stick to Them No matter how famous he became, Bowie didnt abuse his fame. He held himself to a strict work ethic. Though he had a phase where he lost himself in drugs, particularly cocaine, he always managed to pull himself together to perform, record and give interviews. His foil during his LA years was Iggy Pop, who became known for his unpredictability and where Iggy allowed himself to be dragged under by his drug addiction, Bowie set limits for himself and maintained his professional ethics. Dont Be Afraid of the Unknown Bowie was always pushing the boundaries of his art. He was never repetitive or boring. Each album was borne of a daring new journey into unknown waters as he constantly sought to find a new voice and a new inspiration. He explored with musical technology and was known for being fearless and pioneering. His natural curiosity allowed him to follow many different artistic paths to the delight of his fans and music lovers. Bowies artistic vision was fueled by his constant striving for newness. He never allowed himself to settle into one style or voice and as a result, his lifes work is rich and diverse.

Interdependent behavior is an important feature of oligopoly, because the small number of competing firms watch each other closely, devising strategies which take into account the likely reaction of the others. Digital camera market has been growing phenomenally since last 10 years. According to a news report published in ZDNet UK, the sales of digital camera had doubled in the year 2003 on a global scale. Raw and Living Foods Diet Essay -- Health Nutrition Essays
Raw and Living Foods Diet Introduction to the living and raw foods diet Raw and living foods are foods that contain enzymes and have not been heated or cooked in any manner. Raw foodists, or people whose diets consist of at least seventy-five percent raw and living foods, believe in eating an uncooked, unheated, unprocessed and organic plant based diet (http://www.rawfoods.com). Raw foodists hold that the act of cooking food destroys the majority of vitamins, minerals and essential enzymes naturally found in food. These believers also claim that cooking food renders it toxic and is the major cause of health problems (Andrukitas, 1998). The intensity of beliefs held by raw foodists vary with each individual, yet they all support the ideology that cooking is an unnatural process that destroys important and vital nutrients in foods. What are Living and Raw Foods? Living and raw foods are foods that are organic and have not been heated, cooked, or processed in any way. Living and raw foods are foods that are rich in nutrients, vitamins and enzymes. Such enzymes aid the body in the digestion and absorption processes (http://www.rawtimes.com). The difference between living and raw foods is distinguished by the fact that living foods have a higher enzyme content than raw foods. This is true because the enzymes in raw foods are dormant. To activate the enzymes in raw foods, raw foodists simply soak peanuts for example, in water for a period of time until sprouting occurs and the enzymes in the raw food are awakened or brought to life. Educational Psychology and Special Education Essay
What is the definition of a learning disability and who should qualify to be special education? What assessments should be made to be able to know what child belongs where? This is what we are going to explore in this paper. We want to see exactly who qualifies and how to go about assessing what needs can be met by choosing to place a child in special education or leaving in general education and making some modifications. The main point to remember for any child is doing the best we can for their success. Learning disabilities are a bit tough to diagnose, the reason for this is because learning disabilities affects everyone differently. While one person may have difficulty with reading or writing another person may have trouble with math or following through with directions. ââ¬Å"Researchers think that learning disabilities are caused by differences in how a personââ¬â¢s brain works and how it processes informationâ⬠(Medicinenet, 2013) Usually the people with learning disabilities, such as Aspbergers, are highly intelligent and only have problems with how the brain sends the information, not being non-intelligent. IDEA states that ââ¬Å"A learning disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations, including conditions such as perceptual disabilities, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasiaâ⬠. This encompasses a wide range of children and we have to figure out how to best assess whether these children should be put into special education, or if they could function better with modifications to the general education classroom. Because learning disabilities are so multidimensional the assessments must also be in order to properly diagnose what steps to take. One of the most important parts of assessment is to always keep everyone involved in the childââ¬â¢s life in the loop. Keeping open communication and checking often to see what is working and what is not is a vital key to the assessment process. Checking first who needs to be involved within the team and then going from there with making the plan and seeing if it works or what needs to be changed. It is important to find out first if the child truly has a learning disability, second the nature, specificity, and the severity of the learning disability to know how to proceed with it. If you do not know the extent you cannot do very well at teaching for their abilities when you do not know what is lacking. ââ¬Å"schools are required to implement a system of interventions before evaluating a child for a disabilityâ⬠(Logsdon, 2013) This is important because we do not want to put any child into a special education classroom without reason, this would not benefit that child at all. It is so important to know exactly what needs the child has and modify to try to benefit them before you place them. We must not simply send children to special education because the teacher does not want to deal with them. People tend to want to box people into certain categories and this just cannot happen with learning disabilities. A child who may have difficulty reading may be dyslexic, or they may simply not be being read to and worked with enough. They also may have moved into the country fairly recently and may be lacking because of a language barrier. There are 9 ways that are great for adapting instruction to be more easily understood by children with learning disabilities as stated by Teachers First. The first is adapting the size of what they are to read or do, then adapt the time for assignments and testing. Next, increase personal assistance by peer teaching, pairing students who are less adept with more advanced students. Fourth, is input, allow for more hands on types of teaching. Fifth, Adapt the skill level or the amount of problems that they must accomplish and change the output, how they respond to what was taught, such as drawing pictures, writing a story, or working with a computer program related to the lesson. Allow the child to participate in the lesson either mentally or physically to keep them on task. Alternate is the next one, adapt the goals and outcomes with the sameà materials, tailor the lesson to the childââ¬â¢s needs and what they can handle, and lastly change curriculum if necessary. If the lesson is on the Vietnam war, you might be able to have them interview a person from the Vietnam war instead of having a discussion about it as they might get more out of that. It is all about our children and making the lessons understandable to them. An example of making adaptations to a lesson would be a child with vision impairment. For this child it is very difficult towards the end of the day to be able to read because her eyes are fatigued and cannot take much more strain. For this reason her parent is allowed to read to her and she can write her answers to questions because the child simply cannot do that for herself at the end of the day like the other children. She also has adaptations in her regular education classroom with magnifiers, a monitor by her desk to blow up what is on the board, all her books and papers are blown up, and she always sits in the front of the classroom. These are modifications for a visually impaired person who is very bright, but lacks some because of her vision impairment which creates the learning disability. ââ¬Å"The world is full of examples of accommodations that permit people with disabilities to perform specific tasks they might not otherwise be able to. Drivers with poor vision wear glasses or contacts, elevators mark the buttons in Braille, and voters with disabilities may be given assistance by the person of their choice . â⬠(Luke, Schwartz. 2010) We must do the same with our children. We need to take them and assess where their issues lie and do the best we can to create a successful learning environment for them! References Adapting Instruction. (2004, May 4). Sociolinguistics - Language, Dialects and Society
Language is central to social interaction in every society, regardless of location and time period. Language and social interaction have a reciprocal relationship: language shapes social interactions and social interactions shape language. What is Sociolinguistics? Sociolinguistics is the study of the connection between language and society and the way people use language in different social situations. It asks the question, How does language affect the social nature of human beings, and how does social interaction shape language? It ranges greatly in depth and detail, from the study of dialects across a given region to the analysis of the way men and women speak to each other in certain situations. The basic premise of sociolinguistics is that language is variable and ever-changing. As a result, language is not uniform or constant. Rather, it is varied and inconsistent for both the individual user and within and among groups of speakers who use the same language. People adjust the way they talk to their social situation. An individual, for instance, will speak differently to a child than he or she will to their college professor. This socio-situational variation is sometimes called register and depends no only on the occasion and relationship between the participants, but also on the participantsââ¬â¢ region, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and gender. One way that sociolinguists study language is through dated written records. They examine both hand-written and printed documents to identify how language and society have interacted in the past. This is often referred to as historical sociolinguistics: the study of the relationship between changes in society and changes in language over time. For example, historical sociolinguists have studied the use and frequency of the pronoun thou in dated documents and found that its replacement with the word you is correlated with changes in class structure in 16th and 17th century England. Sociolinguists also commonly study dialect, which is the regional, social, or ethnic variation of a language. For example, the primary language in the United States is English. People who live in the South, however, often vary in the way they speak and the words they use compared to people who live in the Northwest, even though it is all the same language. There are different dialects of English, depending on what region of the country you are in. What Sociolinguists Study Researchers and scholars are currently using sociolinguistics to examine some interesting questions about language in the United States: There is vowel shift occurring in the North, in which pattered alterations to vowels is occurring in certain words. For example, many people in Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, and Chicago are now pronouncing bat like bet and bet like but. Who is changing the pronunciation of these vowels, why are they changing it, and why/how is it spreading? What parts of African American Vernacular English grammar are being used by white middle-class teenagers? For example, white adolescents might compliment a peerââ¬â¢s clothes by saying, she money, a phrase associated with African Americans. What will be the impact on language in Louisiana due to the loss of monolingual French speakers in the Cajun region of Southern Louisiana? Will the French features of language be sustained even when these French speakers are gone? What slang terms do younger generations use to show their affiliation with certain subgroups and to distinguish themselves from their parentsââ¬â¢ generation? For example, in the ea rly 2000s, teenagers described things that they enjoyed as cool, money, tight, or sweet, but definitely not swell, which is what their parents would have said when they were teenagers.Which words are pronounced differently according to age, gender, socioeconomic status, or race/ethnicity? For instance, African Americans often pronounce certain words differently than whites. Likewise, some words are pronounced differently depending on whether the person speaking was born after World War II or before.Which vocabulary words vary by region and time, and what are the different meanings associated with certain words? For example, in Southern Louisiana, a certain breakfast dish is often called lost bread while in other parts of the country, it is called French toast. Similarly, which words have changed over time? Frock, for instance, used to refer to a womanââ¬â¢s dress, while today frock is rarely used. Sociolinguists study many other issues as well. For instance, they often examine the values that hearers place on variations in language, the regulation of linguistic behavior, language standardization, and educational and governmental policies concerning language. Case Study Analysis: Discuss the 11 Common Areas of Intercultural Misunderstanding Mirlande Jean-Pierre Davenport University MGMT 535 ââ¬â Spring 1 2015 Dr. Beverly Pierce June 20, 2015) Abstract Nowadays, many companies have prompted business establishments to expand its network across cultures so that they can keep up being culturally competence in the internal business world (Vennapoosa, C., 2012, July). Copernicus Essay - 1578 Words
Copernicus has been named one of the most influential people this millennia by Time Magazine; in part for his movements in though during the scientific revolution; creating a basis for modern astronomy and challenging the Church (of the 15th century) to lead the way to a reform in thinking. He did so by disproving (mathematically) a theory of the heavens that had existed for almost 14 centuries, established by a man named Charles Ptolemy in 250 AD. Copernicus revolutionized astronomy by creating a solid basis for it to stand on, discovering that quot; The Earth was not the centre of the cosmos, but rather one celestial body among many, as it became subject to mathematical description.quot; He compiled a manuscript of his theories,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Any students who had heard his lectures or read his theories were immediately fascinated and learned to follow his research. Copernicus wrote De revoltionibus in six sections, as a mathematical reinterpretation of the Ptolemaic System. In the first section, he gave some basic mathematical rules, countering old arguments about the fixity of the Earth, and discussed the order of the planets from the sun. He could no longer accept the old arrangement - Earth, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn - since this had been a consequence of a geocentric system. He found it necessary to adapt it to his heliocentric system and adopted the following order from the stationary Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth with the Moon orbiting around it, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Not only was Copernicus correct in his theories, but many of his observations and notions about the functions of our heavens still hold true today. The Copernican theory demanded two important changes in outlook. The first had to with the apparent size of the universe. The stars always appeared fixed in precisely the same position, but if the Earth orbited around the Sun, they should display a small periodic change. Copernicus explained that the star was far too distant for the change to be detected. His theory thus led to the belief in a much larger universe than previously conceived and, in England, where the theory was openly accepted with enthusiasm, to the idea of anShow MoreRelatedThe Contributions Of Nicholas Copernicus1684 Words à |à 7 PagesToday Nicholas Copernicus is commonly known as the Father of Modern Astronomy. Business Ethics Business ethics is a topic that is often on the forefront of media and journalism reports in the United States of America today. To someone that doesnââ¬â¢t have a background in business, or a general understanding of the business world, these reports can be cumbersome and hard to follow. One must first understand what business ethics actually are. We will write a custom essay sample on Pepsi Total Reward or any similar topic only for you Order Now Dictionary. com defines business ethics as the study and examination of moral and social responsibility in relation to business practices and decision-making in business (dictionary. com). Once one understands the meaning of business ethics, they often wonder what major companies do to stay ahead of the curve, and excel in the area of business ethics. Sadly, it seems as if the general media is only interested in companies with poor business ethics and practices. Media outfits are able to sell more papers, and gain more viewers, and honest companies such as PepsiCo never get the positive publicity that they deserve. Ethics and compliance are present in PepsiCoââ¬â¢s day to day operations. PepsiCo also has procedures in place to ensure ethical behavior for both their employees, and the company as a whole. Next, one must take a look at processes within the organization PepsiCo employs to comply with SEC regulations. Finally, the financial statements of PepsiCo will be analyzed with the intent of looking into the trend for different ratios and what it tells investors, and the public alike about the organizationââ¬â¢s financial health. In a world that is filled with unethical companies that are lying to their investors, employees, and the public, it is encouraging to still have companies like PepsiCo that are both ethical and compliant. PepsiCo goes to great lengths to attain economic success while still complying to the unwritten laws of business ethics. PepsiCo does this based on three main elements of influence: environmental, talent, and human sustainability. PepsiCo offers consumers a wide array of products from health conscious foods, to comfort foods, to athletic drinks. PepsiCoââ¬â¢s financial stability is greatly influenced by the decision to offer so many products. By doing so, PepsiCo gets to appeal to a variety of consumers, as opposed to just one type. When PepsiCo speaks of environmental sustainability, they are talking about their efforts to ââ¬Å"go greenâ⬠or lessen their environmental footprint. PepsiCo is planning on taking the necessary steps toward reducing their electrical consumption by 20% and reducing fuel consumption by 25% by the year 2015. In 2007, PepsiCo saved nearly five billion liters of water, and nearly five-hundred million kilowatt hours of energy worldwide in 2007 when compared to their use in years past (PepsiCo, 2009). PepsiCo is looking out for the best interests of the environment, an ethical and admirable decision made by the company. PepsiCo is also an equal opportunity employer and they are often praised for the diverse workforce that they develop. When PepsiCo speaks of talent, they are talking about their diverse workforce. PepsiCo also believes in equality, they show this by offering employment to individuals without worrying about gender, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. PepsiCo was named one of Business Ethics Magazineââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"100 best corporate citizensâ⬠. PepsiCo shows loyalty to their employees by trying to promote from within. They also participate in various surveys to prevent any issues, and to address any problem areas. The current CEO of PepsiCo is a woman by the name of Indra Nooyi; since she took over in 2006 she has promoted workplace diversity. PepsiCoââ¬â¢s workplace policies are available in thirty different languages to accommodate many ethnic groups. PepsiCo also does their best to try to spend as much as they could with minority owned businesses, while still looking out for the companyââ¬â¢s best interests. (PepsiCo, 2009). PepsiCo is extremely ethical and compliant when looking at their hiring practices. Human sustainability at PepsiCo is their vow to offer more healthy choices for consumers. PepsiCo is dedicated to their consumers, and is focused on creating and innovating new products that will offer less sugar and staying away from ââ¬Å"empty caloriesâ⬠. PepsiCo has been partnering with the World Health Organization to find new ways to improve the diets of consumers while promoting physical activities. When looking at PepsiCoââ¬â¢s promotion of human sustainability, it is evident that PepsiCo values their consumers, which is valued and ethical. PepsiCo much like any other well respected company, complies with the regulations that are determined by the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission). PepsiCo demonstrates their SEC compliance through their hiring of an independent registered public accounting firm. PepsiCo utilizes the well-known and respected accounting firm Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler which is more commonly referred to as KPMG. KPMG is one of the largest professional services firms in the world and one of the Big Four auditors. The Big Four auditors are KPMG along with PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, and finally Ernst and Young. KPMGââ¬â¢s global headquarters are located in the Netherlands . By employing an outside source, PepsiCo allows the auditing firm KPMG to clearly analyze their numbers, ultimately making independent judgments for the soft drink company. KPMG complies with the laws and guidelines that are set up by the Securities and Exchange Commission through a published report to the SEC that is created quarterly and annually for PepsiCo. The reports that are then created by KPMG offer the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as shareholders, and anyone else interested detailed information on what and where the company is spending money as well as on what and where the company is receiving money. Near the end of PepsiCoââ¬â¢s annual report, there is a statement that speaks of the honesty and integrity of the report. This statement reads: ââ¬Å"Under the supervision and with the participation of our management, including our Chief Executive Officer and our Chief Financial Officer, we conducted and evaluation of the effectiveness of our control over financial reporting based upon the framework in Internal Control ââ¬â Integrated Framework issued by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission. Based on that evaluation our management concluded that our internal control over financial reporting is effective as of December 26, 2009 (PepsiCo, 2009). â⬠Based on that quote, one must believe that PepsiCo is both ethical and compliant with respect to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Despite the worldwide economic turmoil that companies have been forced to deal with, PepsiCo has done their best to rise above the state of the economy, and still post good numbers. PepsiCoââ¬â¢s current ratio for 2008 came out to 1. 23 and the current ratio for 2009 was 1. 35. This means that PepsiCo can pay back its short-term liabilities (debt and payables) with its short-term assets (cash, inventory, receivables) 1. 299 times in 2008 and 1. 435 times in 2009. To properly compute the current ratio for each year an individual would divide the current assets by the current liabilities. The 2008 current ratio for PepsiCo can be calculated by dividing 10,806 by 8,787. This comes out to 1 . 23. The 2009 current ratio for Pepsi is calculated the same way dividing 12,571 by 8,756. This equates to 1. 435. PepsiCo improved their current ratio year over year. A debt ratio is a ratio that indicates what proportion of debt a company has relative to its assets. Thus having a lower percentage would be ideal. PepsiCoââ¬â¢s debt ratio for 2008 was 23%. This can be computed by taking the total debt, which was $ 8,227 and dividing that by the total assets which were $ 35,994. In 2009 the total debt was $7,864 and the total assets were $ 39,848, giving PepsiCo a debt ratio of 19. 7%. Return on equity is known as the amount of net income returned as a percentage of shareholders equity. It can be calculated as the net income divided by common equity, and a higher percentage is favorable. In 2008 the net income was $ 5,166, which is divided by the common equity $ 12,203, this comes out to 12%. In 2009 the net income was $ 5,979 and the common equity was $ 16,908, meaning that the return on equity was 35%. Again, PepsiCo shows improvement year over year. Finally, comes the days receivable. The days receivable are a measure of the average time a companyââ¬â¢s customers take to pay for purchases. The days receivable are equal to accounts receivable divided by annual sales on credit times 365. In 2008 PepsiCoââ¬â¢s accounts receivable came out to $ 4,683, annual sales on credit were $ 20,351, meaning that the days receivable in 2008 equated to 83. 99, or simply 84 days. In 2009 PepsiCoââ¬â¢s accounts receivable came out to $ 4,624, annual sales on credit were $ 20,099, meaning that the days receivable in 2008 equated to 83. 97 or 84 days as well. Year over year, it seems as if PepsiCo remained constant in the area of days receivable. In closing, PepsiCo establishes itself on the forefront of ethics and compliance. PepsiCo also has procedures in place to ensure ethical behavior of employees and shareholders. Finally, PepsiCo has processes that they utilize to comply with SEC regulations. PepsiCo seems to have improved financially year over year between 2008 and 2009. In a world that is filled with unethical companies that are lying to their investors, employees, and the public, it is encouraging to still have companies like PepsiCo that are both ethical and compliant. Martin Luther King Jr Against Prejudice Essay Example For Students
Martin Luther King Jr Against Prejudice Essay How and why did Martin Luther King, Jr. work against prejudice? Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 25th 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America. He was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States and he is frequently referenced as a human rights icon. King became a civil rights activist early in his career. King led many non-violent protests, to make his point; such as sit-ins, strikes, marches, speeches and boycotts. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. Kings efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his I Have a Dream speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U. S. history. During this speech King used many memorable lines such as ââ¬Å"I have a dream that one day little black boys and girls will join hands with little white boys and girls as brothers and sisters. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U. S. national holiday in 1986. Martin Luther King, Jr. Wanted to rid segregation and wanted equal rights for several reasons. One of which was because of personal experience. He didnââ¬â¢t want his children to live a life of racism that he has had to deal with. In one of his speeches he used this quote to agree with this point. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character. â⬠Another reason for Martin Luther King, Jr. wanting a peaceful change was because of his Christian faith. He believed that all men were created equal and should have equal rights in all means. His faith also meant he had to love his neighbour, but he said, ââ¬Å"Love the perso n, hate the evil that person does. ââ¬

Global Warming Contemporary Issues Companion Essay Example
Global Warming: Contemporary Issues Companion Paper If these new weather patterns continue, the panel warned, the whole world could be facing a devastating environmental catastrophe resulting in massive floods, rising seas that wipe out coastal communities, rampant epidemics, millions of people left homeless, plant and animal extinctions on an unprecedented scale, and widespread starvation. What Causes Global Warming? Approximately two-thirds of the energy earth receives from the sun is absorbed by land masses and oceans and is then released into the atmosphere as warm, long-wave radiation. The atmosphere of earth is full of so-called greenhouse gases such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, and nitrous oxide that act like a blanket, trapping some of the heat radiating from the land and oceans and preventing too much energy from escaping into space. The gas blanket works in much the same way as the glass panels of a greenhouse, serving to trap energy and keep temperatures t a steady level. The trapped heat keeps earth at a comfortable average temperature of about sixty-three degrees Fahrenheit. This process is known as the greenhouse effect. Without the protection of the greenhouse gas blanket, life on earth would be difficult or impossible. To illustrate the importance of the greenhouse effect, climate expert Mark Muslin compares earth With Mars and Venus. The atmosphere on Mars does not contain enough carbon dioxide to trap much solar energy, causing the average surface temperature of the planet to stay about 1 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Venus, on the other hand, has a much thicker atmosphere than earth, consisting of approximately 96 percent carbon dioxide. This massive greenhouse blanket results in a surface temperature of 860 degrees Fahrenheit. What does the greenhouse effect have to do with global warming? According to the Epics 2001 report, human activities are causing an increase in the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. An increase in greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide, means more heat is being trapped by the atmosphere, leading to higher temperatures around the globe and the potential for global climate changes. Concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases have been steadily increasing since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century. The use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal has increased carbon dioxide levels by 30 percent. Fossil fuel use, waste dumps, increased agricultural production, and massive livestock operations have increased levels of methane by 240 percent. Modern industries such as aluminum production and the use of liquid coolants such as those in air conditioners have added new gases including proportionate and chlorofluorocarbons (CIFS) to the green house blanket. Because of the increased concentrations of greenhouse gases, states Muslin, planet Earth is warming faster than at any other time in the past 1000 years and there is little doubt that human activity is to blame. The Debate over Global Warming Experts disagree about the causes of global warming, its severity, and how best to solve the problem. Kevin A. Shapiro, a neuroscience researcher based t Harvard, while acknowledging that earths climate has warmed slightly in the last century, argues that this fact more or less exhausts the scientific consensus. On every other important questionwhat the major causes of global warming are, what its effects will be, whether we should try to prevent it and, if so, howthere is considerable uncertainty. The use of computer simulations of weather patterns to predict the future extent and impact of global warming is particularly divisive. According to Shapiro, the use of these models has resulted in the accumulation of patchy and unreliable conclusions bout human impact on earths climate. Even the 2001 EPIC report, which was written by 122 lead authors and 515 contributing authors and was reviewed by another 450 scientists, does not represent total agreement among climate experts about the causes and effects of global warming. Meteorologist Richard Linden, who was one of the 450 scientists who contributed to the report, notes that the summary for policymakers that is widely quoted in the media was written by only 14 of those 450 scientists-? hardly a consensus. In an article about Linden and his views, Newsweek porter Fred Gutter states that many scientists agree that the EPIC, in its zeal to build the case for doing something about global warming, plays fast and loose with the science, glossing over uncertainty and pushing its conclusions too far. Earth Is Getting Warmer Although there is still some dispute about the effect human activities have on global warming and what is ultimately causing global climate change, the experts agree that, whatever the cause, earth is, indeed, getting warmer. Many climate scientists believe that allowing global warming to continue unchecked will have devastating consequences for Earth. Alexander E. MacDonald, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, warns that warming temperatures could lead to devastating changes in weather patterns on a regional level. MacDonald predicts that summers may become much drier in the mid-continents of North America and Eurasia, with the potential to devastate some of the earths most productive agricultural areas. The Arctic ice cap may disappear, a profound blow to a unique and fragile ecosystem. The Atlantic Ocean currents that warm Europe maybe disrupted. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet may collapse, leading to a rise in sea levels around the world. Rising sea levels pose a threat to low-lying islands that could disappear completely under rising water. Warmer, drier summers in the worlds most productive agricultural regions could devastate crop yields. Melting ice in the Arctic will endanger the habitat and food supply of animals such as polar bears. According to many experts on climate change famine, disease, and warfare could ultimately become widespread as water and other resources become scarce or disappear. As John T. Hardy, chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences at Western Washington University, states, there is no longer any doubt that unprecedented changes in climate are taking place. If We continue on our present course, life on Earth will be inextricably altered. The very sustainability of the Earths life-support system is now in question. Not all scientists believe that the potential consequences of global warming will be so dire. Some predict that warmer temperatures will lead to increased crop yields, healthier forests, and an improved quality of life. In an interview for U. S. News World Report, climatologist Craig Ids remarked that the extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is going to be nothing but a boon for the biosphere. Plants will grow like gangbusters. Shapiro points out that early predictions about the consequences of global warming have not yet come to pass. In the 1 sass, he relates, climatologists predicted that sea levels would rise twenty-five feet over the next century. Under the worst-case scenario now envisioned by the EPIC, Shapiro states, the oceans should rise no more than a foot over the next century, not nearly enough to pose a major threat. The Danger of Stopping Global Warming Some researchers believe that the consequences of attempting to slow global warming may be worse than the impact of the warming itself. Attempts to control greenhouse gas emissions could end up hurting the worlds economy.
